Abstract:
Data are presented on the annual nut yields and characteristics of selected cashew trees.
One such tree had an average annual yield of over 78 kg of nuts compared with a local average of less than 5 kg per tree per year.
The best trees have been included in a selection programme and their clonal progenies have been planted in a yield trial.
The plants are now three years old and some have started bearing and look promising.
Observations over a long period indicate that the use of a hedgerow system of planting cashews, either seedlings or clones, would increase yields by as much as eight times the present average.
It is hoped that this system will allow a more efficient use of land in areas of good rainfall and that the farmers will achieve higher incomes.
