ISHS Acta Horticulturae 153: IX African Symposium on Horticultural Crops

INTENSIFICATION OF SWEET POTATO CULTIVATION ON REUNION ISLAND

Author:   R. Michellon
Abstract:
Sweet potatoes can be very successfully grown at altitudes between 800 and 1000 metres above sea level on the leeward side of Réunion island.

Among several local cultivars tested, IRAT 17 has been selected because of its superior yield and high dry matter content.

Regular production can be obtained throughout the year and fertilizer trials have shown that a response can be obtained from nitrogen only.

However, fertilizer application rates should take the high nutrient up-take of the crop into consideration.
