ALTERNARIA LEAF SPOT, A PREVIOUSLY UNREPORTED DISEASE OF ACALYPHA INDICA L. (EUPHORBIACEAE)

Author:   G. C. Kingsland
Abstract:
A necrotic leaf spot disease of Acalypha indica is described from the Seychelles as a new disease of this host. A previously unidentified Alternaria sp. was isolated in pure culture from the lesions. Inoculation of leaves of A. indica with conidia or with mycelium of this Alternaria sp. resulted in the development of typical symptoms on all inoculated leaves within four days. Lesions did not develop on uninoculated leaves. Lesions which developed on leaves inoculated with mycelium were significantly larger than lesions which developed from inoculation with conidia. The Alternaria sp. was re-isolated into pure culture from lesions resulting from both methods of inoculation.
