INTRODUCTION EVALUATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF TROPICAL FRUITS IN THE SEYCHELLES |

| Abstract:
The Seychelles is potentially a highly productive area for tropical fruits due to its particular agro-climatic conditions. The climate, being typically tropical, is characterized by high temperatures and warm nights. At altitudes of 300 – 450 m above sea-level, the cooler areas make it possible to grow sub-tropical crops such as atemoya, lychee and a range of fruits which are better adapted ted to this zone than they are to the coastal areas. In 1978, the Seychelles Government provided significant funding for a project for the development of fruits in order to meet the increasing demand. An active programme was initiated, based on the introduction and testing of new cultivars from research centres and germplasm banks from many tropical regions. The introductions were obtained in the form of seeds, cuttings and budwood. These cultivars are being tested at sea level and also at 350 m above sea level. | |
