RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ON THE TOMATO AT THE MAURITIUS SUGAR INDUSTRY RESEARCH INSTITUTE |

| Abstract:
Research and development on the tomato at MSIRI from 1977 to 1982 are reviewed. The main constraints to production were dependence on one inappropriate cultivar and land scarcity. The objectives were to develop better cultivars and to work out methods for their cultivation both in pure stands and in sugar cane interrows. Tomato lines were introduced from the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Centre. Selection was practised for determinate growth habit, high yield, resistance to bacterial wilt, tolerance of hot and humid conditions and fruit quality. A number of selections with these characteristics were obtained and released for commercial exploitation. The new cultivars have been well accepted by planters and consumers and can be grown in full stand without staking. Moreover, when grown in sugar cane interrows the yield of sugar is not reduced. | |
