THE VALUE OF LEACHING FOR REMOVING INORGANIC BROMIDE RESIDUES FROM SOIL AFTER APPLICATION OF METHYL BROMIDE |

| Abstract:
Determinations of Br- content in vegetables grown in soil fumigated with methyl bromide at 448 kg/ha showed that accumulation of bromide ion at harvest tended to be greater in leaves than in roots and fruits. Much higher concentrations were present in plant tissue than remained in treated soils. At harvest, concentrations of bromide ion were proportional to rate of application for onion, lettuce and asparagus. When onion and lettuce were planted the following year in the same plots, accumulation of bromide ion was again proportional to rate of application, but slopes of the relationship between concentration and rate of application were significantly less (p ≤ 0.05) than in the preceding year. Leaching by sprinkler irrigation 10 days after fumigation with 5 or 10 cm water reduced concentrations in asparagus, cantaloupe, lettuce and onion. | |
