SOIL FUMIGATION WITH BASAMID GRANULAR, INCLUDING NEW EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS

Authors:   U. Neumann, H. Will, H. Gröner
Abstract:
Basamid Granular is an effective and versatile soil fumigant that works by the conversion of dazomet to MITC. When all the use instructions are carefully followed (theoretical requirements, etc.), in particular when sufficient soil moisture is available to maintain the pathogenes in a susceptible state and to promote rapid conversion of dazomet to MITC, satisfactory results are obtained wherever it is employed - in seed beds, greenhouses or in the open field.

It is possible to use Basamid Granular on plots varying considerably in size, because application can be made by hand, working in with a hoe, as well as with special applicators and rotavators. Rotavators used for incorporation should have L-shaped blades and a rotation speed of more than 130 r.p.m. In recent experiments Basamid Granular also gave good results in controlling the particularly difficult disease, Club root of Brassicas, as long as application was made in summer and directly before planting a susceptible crop.

It was also shown in numerous trials in the field that interesting and worthwhile yield increases can be obtained when a reduced rate of 20 g/m2 Basamid Granular is used prior to planting strawberries and various vegetables.
