Abstract:
Occasional dissemination of the fire olight organism (Erwinia amylovora) from symptomless scionwood into apparently healthy rootstocks has been shown to occur through simple tree budding experiments.
The presence of epiphytic populations of E. amylovora on the surface of various tree tissues in a severely blighted 'Rome' apple orchard was quite high.
Rainwater collected under these trees contained numerous fire blight bacteria.
