ISHS Acta Horticulturae 151: III International Workshop on Fire Blight

ACTUAL SITUATION OF FIREBLIGHT CONTROL IN SWITZERLAND

Author:   R. Grimm
Abstract:
The situation has changed remarkably for Switzerland since the last I.S.H.S. Fireblight meeting at Kiel FRG. The disease has now reached the Swiss border, but so far no fireblight has been detected in Switzerland.

For this reason, preventive measures were taken, e.g. improvement in controlling import plant material, extension of the nursery control service, rationalization of tests in the phytobacterial service laboratory at Wädenswil.

In 1982 597 plants or parts of plants were examined at our laboratory for the detection of fireblight. In 1983 the number of plants examined was reduced. Instruction and information was improved.

In different regions the Billing Prognosis System was adopted by various plant protection services. Much office work concerning fireblight was done, e.g. health certificates for export of host plants and apple rootstocks were issued. Imports of host plant scions (for a two years quarantine) were carried out to obtain new varieties.

Actually there are 64 Swiss pear varieties at the Fruit Research Station in Kearneysville WV, USA and 13 pear and apple varieties at the Biologische Bundesanstalt Kiel/Heikendorf FRG for the susceptibility test.
