ISHS Acta Horticulturae 151: III International Workshop on Fire Blight

SURVEYS FOR THE PRESENCE OF FIRE BLIGHT IN SOME ITALIAN FRUIT GROWING AREAS

Author:   A. Calzolari
Abstract:
In 1981, 1982 and 1983, during Spring and Autumn, surveys were made in some of the more typical fruit-growing areas of the Alto-Adige, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna regions, to discover any eventual outbreaks of fireblight. These surveys were carried out by groups of experts to check visually Erwinia amylovøra host plants in commercial orchards, nurseries and gardens. Samples of plant material with symptoms resembling fireblight were subjected to bacteriological analyses in the laboratory, including isolation on nutrient media and rapid identification. All field surveys and laboratory analyses gave negative results.

Our results and the absence of any reporting of fireblight by the national phytosanitary control services indicate that Italy is still free from fireblight.
