ISHS Acta Horticulturae 151: III International Workshop on Fire Blight

PYRACANTHA BREEDING PROGRAM IN FRANCE : FIRST RESULTS

Author:   A. Cadic
Abstract:
A breeding program on Pyracantha started in 1982 granted by some nurserymen. Main goals are : disease resistance against scab (Fusicladium pyracanthae) and fire blight (Erwinia amylovora), fast growing and free flowering and fruiting.

This paper describes the breeding scheme, underlining problems and prospects. First results are given ; they show that in south western conditions of France P. atalantioides, P. angustifolia and P. coccinea 'Moretti' are very susceptible when shoot inoculated with fire blight. P. rogersiana 'Flava', P. 'Golden Glow', P. 'Orange Glow' and P. 'Ventoux Red' must be considered as susceptible. All other varieties tested were almost symptomless. The very first progenies obtained in 1982 by crossing or selfing were screened against scab and fire-blight ; figures are given and results are discussed.
