Abstract:
The main programme in apple breeding is to screen for resistance to diseases and pests.
Besides scab and mildew resistance, fireblight resistance is highly important.
Two research programmes are undertaken:
- Short term : the parents are resistant or low susceptible to fireblight (polygenic control) ; they are varieties or hybrids resistant to scab (gene Vf), for example, the variety 'Liberty'. Moreover, the parents used in the whole programme and all the pre-selections resistant to other diseases are inoculated and tested in the experimental orchard of Dax.
- Long term : the parents are resistant to fireblight (oligogenic control) ; they are wild species, Malus X robusta 5, Malus X sublobata.
One another way is to select for resistance or low susceptibility after mutagenesis ; the advantage of the method is to preserve the variety phenotype.
The first works are realized by in vitro culture and the variety 'Idared' is concerned.
