Authors:   C. Fideghelli, D. Cobianchi, L. Rivalta, G. Della Strada, H.P. Maas Geesteranus
Abstract:
In 1980 a breeding program for resistance to fire blight (Erwinia amylovora (Burr.) Windslow et al.) in cooperation among Istituto Sperimentale per la Frutticoltura (ISF) of Rome (Italy), Instituut voor Plantenziektenkundig Onderzoek of Wageningen (Holland) and Dax-Labatut Experimental Farm (France) within the C.E.E. working group on fire blight.

In Italy, up to now, fire blight has not been found, but the climatic conditions of the Po Valley, the main Italian pear district, are considered suitable for the spread of the disease that is moving south from northern Europe was started.

Considering the tremendous economical importance of the Italian pear industry (1.2 – 1.3 million tons per year), the ISF began several years ago the introduction for testing of many resistant cultivars and selections to know their behaviour in our climatic conditions.

The program emphazizes the breeding of dwarf and semi-dwarf varieties suitable for high density orchards to be managed from the ground.
