Abstract:
Strains of E. amylovora that are differentially virulent to specific apple cultivars have been identified.
Most notably, strain Ea 266 was differentially virulent to the apple cultivar Quinte and to clones of some Malus species that had been identified previously as resistant to fire blight.
Serial passage experiments indicated that the virulence of E. amylovora can change depending on the resistance of the host plant.
The differential virulence of the strains used for evaluation of fire blight resistance in a breeding program appeared to affect the selection of resistance.
