STUDIES ON AVIRULENT STRAINS OF ERWINIA AMYLOVORA

Author:   E. Billing
Abstract:
Avirulent strains of Erwinia amylovora which had lost their ability to produce capsules and extra-cellular polysaccharide (EPS) induced watery cell leakage when inoculated alone into pear slices. In combination with a capsulated/EPS-producing avirulent culture, however, typical milky bacterial ooze was produced. Thus virulence appears to be associated with two factors, a cell leakage-inducing agent and EPS.

Some of the non-capsulated cultures were able to produce capsules and EPS in the presence of galactose though their growth was inhibited at high concentrations of this sugar. From studies with other Enterobacteriaceae, it seems likely that such strains lack the enzyme UDP-Gal-4-epimerase.
