ISHS Acta Horticulturae 151: III International Workshop on Fire Blight

RESEARCH REPORT ON ERWINIA AMYLOVORA

Authors:   J. De Ley, R. Vantomme, J. Swings, K. Kersters, C. Rijckaert, M. Goor, J. Mergaert, J. Geenen
Abstract:
The phenotypic characterization (85 features per strain) of 144 Erwinia amylovora strains from various origins and a numerical analysis of these data showed the high relatedness between the isolates. This was confirmed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of soluble cell proteins.

The rapid identification of E. amylovora by API 20E is proposed.

The aggressiveness of 14 E. amylovora strains against 15 host plants was determined. Stranvaesia davidiana was the most susceptible host plant, whereas Sorbus aucuparia was the most resistant one.

Compound CGA 78039 was found to be very active against E. amylovora in vitro but did not suppress fire blight symptoms in vivo.

From the 137 bacteria tested for antagonistic effects against 24 E. amylovora isolates, 15 showed a marked activity.
