BIOCHEMICAL ASPECTS OF THE EPS OF ERWINIA AMYLOVORA I. THE EFFECT OF EPS ON OXYGEN CONSUMPTION IN PEAR LEAVES

Author:   W. Zeller
Abstract:
Studies on the effect of the EPS from Erwinia amylovora on oxygen consumption in pear leaf pieces after a preincubation period of 18 h were undertaken. It was demonstrated that a decrease in oxygen consumption in pear leaf pieces was correlated with the concentration of the EPS. Furthermore, an inhibition in the accumulation of phenolic substances is suspected. Bioassay with young pear shoots showed that after 18 h a complete wilting had been developed. The results indicate a complex mode of action of this pathotoxic substance.
