ISHS Acta Horticulturae 151: III International Workshop on Fire Blight

RECENT PROGRESS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF BIOLOGICAL CONTROL FOR FIRE BLIGHT - A REVIEW

Authors:   S.V. Beer, J.R. Rundle, J.L. Norelli
Abstract:
Strains of Erwinia herbicola have been identified that suppress the development of fire blight blossom infection, in some cases, to the same extent as streptomycin. The ability of strains to suppress the development of fire blight is not correlated with their ability to produce bacteriocins i n vitro. A laboratory assay using immature pear fruits has been developed to identify strains of bacteria that are likely to suppress fire blight blossom infection in the orchard. Strains of E. herbicola have been identified that are significantly more effective in suppressing fire blight than strains tested initially. The efficacy of the strains in suppressing the development of fire blight is affected by their concentration, time of application and physiological state.
