ISHS Acta Horticulturae 151: III International Workshop on Fire Blight

RECENT PROGRESS IN CHEMICAL CONTROL OF FIRE BLIGHT

Authors:   T.J. Burr, J.L. Norelli
Abstract:
Early-season applications of copper compounds reduced the amount of Erwinia amylovora that could be detected on fire blight canker surfaces on apple trees. Bordeaux mixture was not significantly more effective than copper hydroxide (Kocide) or copper oxychloride sulfate (COCS). Early-season sprays did not reduce subsequent blossom blight in an orchard where conditions were favorable for disease development. In laboratory pear fruit cube tests and in orchard blossom blight control tests, streptomycin, CGA 78039, BASF 0028, MBR 10995 and MBR 25930 showed significant activity as compared to checks. Russetting of Golden Delicious fruit was less with BASF 0028 than with copper hydroxide when sprays were applied at petal-fall and 2 weeks later.
