ISHS Acta Horticulturae 151: III International Workshop on Fire Blight

CLIMATE AND FIRE-BLIGHT IN THE NORTH OF FRANCE

Authors:   P. BALAVOINE, D. CALLU
Abstract:
For the last four years, we have recorded fire-blight damage in the contamined areas of northern France, paying particular attention to an orchard of Doyenné du Comice (Wallon Cappel) in Flandres.

In this orchard, we have investigated the use of Billing's system I for fire-blight risk assessment using climatological data supplied by a meteorological station situated 5 km distant.

We have tried to observe whether fire-blight incidence coincides with climate based forecasts and to examine in detail the appearance of symptoms during the growing season.

Billing's system I performs well during the primary blossom period of pear however adjustments are probably required for the post-blossom period and during dry periods in the summer.
