PRINCIPLES AND APPLICATIONS OF FIRE BLIGHT RISK ASSESSMENT SYSTEMS

Abstract:
Fireblight epidemiology is complex and current risk assessment systems do not cover all aspects of the disease cycle. Nevertheless, as they stand, they do reflect trends to a useful degree, especially during the main blossom period. Current systems are based largely on daily temperatures and rainfall records but field data, including flowering periods, are an essential part of the input. The precision and reliability of any system will depend on the quality and quantity of the input and its relation to the growth and physiology of the host plant and of the pathogen. There will always be room for refinements and improvements based on experimental data and field observations and further automation is possible. Principles and applications of current systems are outlined with some suggestions regarding improvements.
