ISHS Acta Horticulturae 150: International Symposium on Substrates in Horticulture other than Soils In Situ

RAPID BIOASSAY TO CONTROL MATURITY IN PINE BARK COMPOST

Authors:   J. Jorba, M.I. Trillas
Abstract:
A rapid bioassay to demostrate the degradation of phytotoxic compounds in fresh pine bark was developed. The assay is based on the germination of Lepidium sativum L. seeds in Petri dishes.

The evolution of compost has been studied throughoutly. A paralelism was observed between germination index of L. sativum, and pH, and temperatures in compost heap.

It is concluded that the phytotoxic effects of fresh bark of Pinus insignis and Pinus halepensis are maximum at 3 weeks before starting compost, and decline after 7 weeks of composting.
