| Abstract:
Only raised bog peats are suited for the industrial production of horticultural peat substrates. This is due to their good physical and chemical properties. Freeze-treated black peat is gaining more and more recognition as a primary substrate component, having better physical properties than otherwise exploited black peat. Well-balanced mixtures of slightly and strongly (freeze-treated) decomposed peats combine their advantages making them optimal for plant growth. A conscientious peat industry in collaboration with science can fulfill the vigorous needs of horticultural substrates and can assure the availability of such products as long as weather does not disturb extraction and preparation. High quality substrates require careful handling making it necessary for growers to consider various possible negative influences during stocking. | |
