ISHS Acta Horticulturae 150: International Symposium on Substrates in Horticulture other than Soils In Situ

COMPOSTING COMBINED CITY REFUSE AND SEWAGE SLUDGE

Authors:   M. Soliva, M. Pujola, M.J. Bonilla, R. Poch, F. Giraldez, M. Batllo
Abstract:
About 8 tons of city refuse were composted with two thousand liters of liquid sewage for four months.

The composting of these substances was carried out on sandy soil in an outdoors pile. During the process, the temperature of the pile was measured daily and the product characteristics were controlled periodically. The sampling was also studied.

The changes of temperature and the evolution of the chemical and physical-chemical parameters were normal. The final product had not very good visual characteristics because the city refuse had not - been chosen previosusly (it contained a lot of glass and plastics). For this reason the final product was sieved and its appearance was improved.

Below there are the characteristics of first products and the final compost.

City refuse Sewage sludge final compost
PH 5,3 6,3 8,2
%H2O 57,0 95,5 31,4
%N 2,01 3,91 1,10
%C 35,1 31,3 11,4
C/N 18,6 8,0 10,4

With the obtained product we have realized experiences of germination, rooting and growing, mixing it with perlite and bark to increase the porosity of the product. The plants used were Tagetes Sp, Ficus benjamina and Scindapsus Aureus.
