ISHS Acta Horticulturae 150: International Symposium on Substrates in Horticulture other than Soils In Situ

THE USE OF WOOD WASTE COMPOSTS IN THE MAKING OF SUBSTRATES FOR CONTAINER CROPS

Authors:   L.M. RIVIERE, C. MILHAU
Abstract:
The use, for the making of substrates, of wood waste composts would make it possible both to limit the utilization of expensive materials like peat and to valorize particularly bulky wastes. In France, as in many European countries, this possibility raises an increasing interest for horticulturists and professionals of substrates. The purpose of this paper is to focus attention on the existence of different attempts in order to draw some future prospects. At present, the considered products are the forest exploitation residues (bark, underwood of the mediterranean forests, top and branches of pine forest) and the pruning wood of green space services in big towns. Ground bark of Pinus pinaster is already usually employed in the substrates for container crops. After some indications about the technique of composting, and about the properties of the products, the authors report the result of a trial conducted with the City of BOURGES, from composted wastes of pruning of Acer and Platanus. In conclusion, it appears that it is possible to valorize an important proportion of wood wastes, under certain conditions concerning composting and cultural techniques (irrigation and fertilization).
