ISHS Acta Horticulturae 150: International Symposium on Substrates in Horticulture other than Soils In Situ

THE PHYSICO-CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF HORTICULTURAL SUBSTRATES

Author:   G.C.S. Wilson
Abstract:
Due to the problems of getting good quality soil, more and more artificial substrates are being used in Horticulture. A review is given of the physico-chemical and physical properties and tests for horticultural substrates.

The following tests need to be carried out to ascertain the efficiency of a substrate as a growth medium, pH, conductivity, base exchange capacity and buffering capacity, also bulk density, size distribution, total pore space, available water and air capacity. It is also necessary to carry out additional tests on specific substrates.
