ISHS Acta Horticulturae 149: Flowering and Fruit Set in Fruit Trees

VEGETATIVE VIGOR CONTROL OVER LOCATION AND FATE OF FLOWER BUDS, IN FRUIT TREES

Author:   J.J. Crabbé
Abstract:
Our understanding of floral evocation in fruit trees remains poor, because of the difficulty of predicting where and when flower buds are to be initiated.

From observations and experiments on flower formation in axillary buds of extension shoots, floral initiation appears to start at locations where buds get involved in anticipated growth, when the shoot is vigorous. The physiological conditions in these locations can be deeper analyzed, on basis of present knowledge of vegetative growth regulation.

Apart from its scientific interest, this approach might also improve our methods to better fruit bud quality.
