Abstract:
The influence of a higher night temperature than day temperature on the production and quality of 'Sonia' roses was studied.
It appeared that if day period and night period both were 12 hours long, an increase of the night temperature and a proportional decrease in day temperature together with a constant 24 hours temperature leads to a higher production of a lower quality.
If a high night temperature of 24°C lasts 6–9 hours a higher production is obtained without loosing much quality.
The increase of production is ascribed to the formation of a lower percentage of flowerless "blind" shoots.
