ISHS Acta Horticulturae 148: III International Symposium on Energy in Protected Cultivation

ENERGY SAVING TEMPERATURE REGIMES FOR VEGETABLE GROWING

Author:   E. Kooistra
Abstract:
Important vegetable crops grown under glass in the Netherlands, requiring a lot of energy, are tomato, cucumber, sweet pepper and eggplant. The early cultivation of these crops starts in the winter months. After the plants have been raised in smaller compartments or on specialised nurseries, they are planted out in the glasshouse from December onwards.

During a number of years investigations have been carried out with these crops into the effects of temperature control on growth, production and quality. The purpose of this research was to acquire a fuel saving temperature regime justified in terms of yield and quality. The results of these investigations will be briefly summarized for each separate crop.

To begin with however some general remarks.
