COMPENSATING REDUCED LUMINOSITY BY CONDITIONING THE CLIMATE IN HORTIPLUS GLASSHOUSES FOR TOMATOES

Authors:   F. BENOIT, J. VAN LOOY, W. BAETS, N. CEUSTERMANS
Abstract:
Under Hortiplus glass with low emissivity and an improved light reducing effect of only 9 per cent as compared to ordinary glass, no extra loss in production was recorded when the climate in the house was properly adapted.

The air temperature in the Hortiplus house was on average 0.2° C higher, the relative air humidity was one per cent lower, and the temperature of the heating pipes was approx. 7° C lower. Ventilation was also more intensive. Theoretically this treatment should allow transpiration to occur more rationally, thus inducing improved assimilation and a better supply of water and nutrients.

This improvement of the microclimate was obtained while reducing the overall energy consumption by 25 per cent.
