Abstract:
The University of Guelph-Texaco Cooperative Greenhouse Research Project utilizing recycled low temperature water from the refinery process as a heat source was carried out from August 1980 to December 1982. The cooling water temperature of 22–25°C was increased when required to 27–30°C in a steam jacket heated with waste steam.
In single layered fiberglass or glass house night set greenhouse temperature of 17°C could not be maintained with outdoor temperatures below 0°C. The greenhouse, however, was kept from freezing even at -25°C. Good commercial tomato yields were obtained with the nutrient film technique (NFT) culture and the heating system used in this study.
It is likely that minimum night temperatures of 17°C could be achieved throughout the growing season using more energy efficient technological developments and energy efficient greenhouses.
