Abstract:
Hokkaido, the northern most island of Japan, has a severe climate in winter.
Most commercial greenhouses are not in production during the winter because of high cost of heating.
It is therefore important to develop inexpensive sources for greenhouse heating.
Some alternative heat resources are now used for greenhouse heating; hot water from springs is the most common.
An example of hot spring use for greenhouse heating is in the towns of Mori and Soubetsu, in Hokkaido.
New greenhouses using waste hot water from an electric power plant are also planned for construction in Mori.
Hot water from wells has been used for 32 greenhouses in Soubetsu since 1982. Forty-three greenhouses which use heat produced from an incineration plant have been operating since December 1982 in Sapporo, a city in Hokkaido.
The bark of the larch tree and the waste oil from trains is used as a fuel for greenhouse heating in the town of Higashikawa, Hokkaido.
