ENERGY SAVING AT IRIS FORCING BY SMOKE-TREATED BULBS

Author:   J.A. Schipper
Abstract:
The standard recommendation for the early forcing of Iris bulbs has been storage for 2 weeks at 35°C followed by 3 days at 40°C. Despite this treatment, however, flower losses are incurred due to 3-leaved plants and flower-bud blasting. The present study has shown that losses due to 3-leaved plants can be prevented and those due to flower-bud blasting can be reduced by giving the bulbs a treatment with smoke of burning wet straw during storage at 30°C or even, possibly, a treatment with ethylene.
