ISHS Acta Horticulturae 147: Symposium on Production Planning in Glasshouse Floriculture

THE USE OF PRODUCTION PLANNING IN MARKETING

Author:   E. Jørgensen
Abstract:
The total value in 1982 of Danish potplant production was 1.237 mill. D.kr. Over the last five years there has been an increase of 13–19% p.a. (table 1). In 1982 the export value was 910 mill. D.kr., i.e. 74%. As it is seen the export has increased with 20–25% p.a. whereas the home market turnover has stagnated within the same period.

84% of the Danish potplant export is handled by 6 companies who are working together in a loose collaboration (table 2). This collaboration involves certain mutual agreements in sales conditions, rules for exchange of potplants, transfer of growers payment, a transport container system (70.000 in use), mutual market fees, and finally the registration system. The remaining 16% of the potplant export is handled by smaller exporters in Copenhagen and Odense as well as direct sale to Swedish wholesalers in Copenhagen.

The sales registration is divided in two parts, a long term registration recording with a 12 months forecast made 3 times a year (January, May, and September) and a short term registration made every two weeks, i.e. 26 times per year.
