ISHS Acta Horticulturae 147: Symposium on Production Planning in Glasshouse Floriculture

THE MINIMUM NUMBER OF SHORT DAY EXPOSURES FOR PRODUCING HIGH QUALITY SPRAY CHRYSANTHEMUMS

Author:   Anton M. Kofranek
Abstract:
Chrysanthemum Xmorifolium Ramat, cvs. Polaris and White Marble, 9 week response group, were given 0 to 8 weeks of short days (SD) during the long days of summer to determine how many consecutive SD were necessary before finally removing the black cloth before harvest. Both cultivars required at least 5 weeks of SD to produce high quality blooms as did the controls which had 8 weeks of SD.

An experiment designed to find how many SD were required before interrupting the SD cycle with 1 or 2 LD per week, i.e., the ommission of black cloth on the weekends. About 14 consecutive SD were required for 'White Marble' and about 19 SD for 'Polaris' for a one day per week interruption and 19 to 20 SD for 'White Marble' and 22 to 24 SD for 'Polaris' for a 2 LD interruption. The flower quality of these were equal to SD being applied continuously to maturity.
