ISHS Acta Horticulturae 147: Symposium on Production Planning in Glasshouse Floriculture

PRODUCTIONPLANNING IN DANISH NURSERIES

Author:   E. Moes
Abstract:
The horticultural industry in Denmark has developed in the direction of fewer and bigger specialize firms.

As a part of this development the Danish Advisery-Service have to be specialized too. If you want to advice growers with special production it demands advicers with a special knowledge.

In the early seventies the advicers who work with advicing the pot-plantgrowers got to know that the growers showed an interest in informations about productionplanning besides the advising in plantgrowing. We felt that many growers would like to involve the advicers with solving the problems of production-planning.

Then the Advicery-Service began to offer calculations of production-plans for there nurseries and it seems to be a natural part of the development. The plans we made in the beginning contend almost only a calculation of when to start growing the plants and how many plants, it was possible to grow, on the available area.

It showed quickly that those plans were not good enough, and it was necessary to consider the sale, so you got both a good exploitation of the area and a good salesdistribution. It complicated the problems, that there now were two things you have to consider, but it appears not to be enough. By several occasions it showed that it might be necessary to consider the labourcomsumption or the number of mother-plants to work out production-plans which it was possible to carry out in the single nursery.
