ISHS Acta Horticulturae 146: International Workshop on Controlling Vigor in Fruit Trees

STEM ANATOMICAL STRUCTURE OF DELICIOUS AND GOLDEN DELICIOUS APPLE HYBRIDS WITH VARIOUS GROWTH DYNAMICS

Authors:   F. Jaumien, M. Faust
Abstract:
Anatomical structure of terminal shoots of 'Delicious' and 'Golden Delicious' F2 generation hybrids having various vigor (low, medium and high) was examined. Anatomical structure of terminal shoots of low vigor trees having short internodes differed from the high vigor trees. Anatomical structure of terminal shoots of trees with medium vigor was of intermediate character.

The differences occurred in the width and structure of xylem layer. Xylem conducting elements of terminal shoots axes of low vigor trees were sparsely placed in the parenchymatous tissue and had narrower lumen than those of high and medium vigor trees. The number and length of parenchymatous cells of cortex and pith of the dwarf trees were lower than those of the large trees.
