Abstract:
Apple production in Washington State has changed considerably during the last 40 years.
The choice of the tree type today is the spur type scion on seedling root.
There are differences in vigor or compactness between Delicious spurs.
Carnafix and Cascade are the most compact, and Imperial is the most vigorous.
It is easier to manage a tree on standard root than on Malling dwarfing rootstock.
It is expected that some of the dwarf strains such as Cascade will produce efficient orchards with as many as 800 trees per acre on vigorous rootstock.
