Abstract:
Mature 'Sunqueen' {Prunus persica (L.) Batsch} peach trees were pruned in mid-July (11 weeks after full bloom), during the dormant season in late March or mowed in mid-July with follow-up dormant pruning.
Compared to dormant pruning, summer mowing suppressed the increase in scaffold branch circumference but not trunk circumference.
Shoot extension at 3 canopy positions was not significantly influenced by the pruning treatment.
Results are based on a single season and are considered preliminary, but summer pruning did not appear to suppress shoot growth more than dormant pruning.
