ISHS Acta Horticulturae 146: International Workshop on Controlling Vigor in Fruit Trees

BREEDING PROGRAM BY ISF OF ROME TO DEVELOP GENTIC DWARF TREES

Authors:   C. Fideghelli, G. Della Strada, R. Quarta
Abstract:
The breeding of genetic dwarf cultivars, obtained both by cross-pollination and by ionizing radiations, is one of the main objectives of the breeding program of the Istituto Sperimentale per la Frutticoltura (ISF) of Rome (Italy). The present program concerns the species apricots, sweet cherries, peaches and nectarines, Japanese and European plums, apples and pears.

The most advanced is the program on sweet cherries, in whose ambit, in 1983, two compact mutants of Burlat and Durone di Vignola II varieties have been introduced commercially.

Also the program on the apples, particularly on Annurca variety, is in the phase at the regional tests of the advanced selections. The final objective of this program is the propagation of the dwarf varieties on their own roots through the "in vitro" propagation technique, to establish high density orchards to be managed by the ground.
