ISHS Acta Horticulturae 146: International Workshop on Controlling Vigor in Fruit Trees

TISSUE DEVELOPMENT WITHIN THE GRAFT UNION AS RELATED TO DWARFING IN APPLE

Authors:   R.K. Simons, M.C. Chu
Abstract:
Tissue variations exist within graft unions where two or more genetic systems are combined. This research found significant differences between the stock/scion combinations sampled as to the vascular tissue development associated with malfunctions. More calcium was found throughout the conducting phloem than in the non-conducting phloem, cambium or xylem. Excessive non-conducting phloem was found in the extreme dwarfing rootstocks, and calcium accumulation was associated with necrotic tissue.
