Abstract:
Mycorrhizal and saprophytic fungi have been identified on roots of mature apple trees on MM 111 rootstock.
Extensive mycorrhizal infection of fleshy roots has been observed.
The endomycorrhizal fungus has been identified as Glomus sp., most likely G. fasciculatus.
Incubation of partially surface sterilized woody roots revealed colonization by septate fungi.
One of them has been isolated and identified as a strain of Fusarium equiseti (Corda).
Inoculations of in vitro and potted apple seedlings, and field grown MM 111 rootstocks with the above strain of Fusarium equiseti indicate saprophytic association of this fungus with the apple roots.
The role of saprophytic fungi in providing a continuum between root surface and soil particles is being proposed.
