Abstract:
Present knowledge on the possibilities to develop cultivars of fruit trees with reduced size is summarized.
Terms commonly used in horticultural literature: vigor of the tree, spur-type, compact, and genetic dwarf are described.
It is proposed that vigor is used for describing rate of growth; spur-type and short internode when appropriate to describe a condition but not used as synonym; and compact type for describing trees which at the same time have a combination of small size, short internodes and high spurriness.
Genetic dwarf is a collective term that should include all types of reduced-size trees which transmit this character genetically.
The present spur-type apple cultivars, although only moderately reduced in size, should be considered as genetic dwarfs.
