THE EFFECT OF NITROGEN ON YIELD OF GREENHOUSE TOMATOES GROWN IN PEAT, PINE BARK AND SAWDUST

Abstract:
The response of tomato plants to nitrogen was studied in a pot experiment. Plants were grown in sphagnum peat, old pine bark and sawdust. Nitrogen was supplied as liquid feeding in 150, 300, 450 ppm and 150 ppm concentration up to the flowering of the second cluster and then 300 ppm was applied. The concentration of potassium /300 ppm/ and magnesium /50 ppm/ was constant in the liquid feeding. Phosphorus was added before planting in the amount of 5 g P per plant.

The lowest nitrogen concentration /150 ppm/ was sufficient for maximum yield on all three media. The total mean yield on sawdust was lower than on sphagnum peat and old pine bark, but there was no significant difference between media used in marketable yield.
