PEPPER SEEDLING, A SALT SENSITIVE CROP

Authors:   V. Kanazirska, Chr. Simidchiev, V. Rankov
Abstract:
An experiment was conducted with seedling of pepper variety Danube, pricked out in cubes of stonewool with size of 7 x 7 x 4 cm. The watering was done by nutrient solution with different salt concentration, from 1.5 to 6.0 mS/cm.

High positive correlation between the salt concentration of nutrient solution for watering /X/ and of solution in substrate /Y/ : Y = 2.67 X - 0.24; r = 0.994 was established.

With salinity of nutrient medium dry matter content increases from 12.3 to 15.5 per cent, but total weight of plants decreases 8 times, while height - 3 times. The stem get thin, the leaves remain small. The plants grow the best at use of nutrient solution with concentration of 1.5 – 2.0 mS/cm, which corresponds to an electric conductivity of solution in substrate from 3 to 5 mS/cm. Concentrating of nutrient solution results in an increase of nitrogen and potassium content in plant mass and retaining of phosphorus, calcium and magnesium, in which the ratio between the nutrients is changed.
