ISHS Acta Horticulturae 145: Symposium on the Use of Fertilizers in Protected Vegetable Production

THE UPTAKE OF FERTILIZER AND SOIL NITROGEN BY PEPPER PLANTS

Authors:   L. Raikova, V. Rankov
Abstract:
The effect is studied of the rate and form of N fertilizer application on the uptake of soil and fertilizer N by pepper plants. For this purpose a greenhouse pot experiment is used which was carried out in 1981 with two widely distributed pepper varieties: Kurtovo long fleshy pepper and Buketen. The study was conducted with two forms of N fertilizer - ammonium nitrate and urea 15N tagged. Three rates of each form of N fertilizer application were tested: 0, 250 and 500 mg/1 kg soil used on a 250 mg/1 kg soil P and K background.

Data are reported on the yields of fruits and leaves and stems, of total N content and 15N concentration. The amounts are established of fertilizer and soil N taken up by the plants and of soil N additionally mobilized under the influence of N fertilization. The coefficient is determined of the utilization of fertilizer N by using the tracer method and the method of differences. The distribution of the taken up soil and fertilizer N in the fruits and the stems and the leaves is also studied.
