ISHS Acta Horticulturae 145: Symposium on the Use of Fertilizers in Protected Vegetable Production

THE SLOW RELEASE N, K FERTILIZERS ON ORGANIC CARRIERS AND THEIR APPLICATION IN HORTICULTURE

Authors:   H. Struszczyk, A. Beresniewicz, O. Nowosielski
Abstract:
In the approach to the problem of correlation between fertilizer action and nutrients requirment are observed several trends /1–2/ among others the modification of fertilizers, applications of the nitrification inhibitors, encapsulation of fertilizers by water resistant or water non-disolving materials as well as the elaboration of the new fertilizers types with controlled, slowly released components.

A new tendency for the slow release fertilizers is concerned with application of the organic substrates as carriers for N,K components /3–4/. A base of these fertilizers is the use as carriers the natural polymeric materials containing especially cellulose and lignins for example peat, bark, brown coal or cellulosic pulp. The properties and structure of above polymers /5–8/ are adequate for inclusion of nutrient components and their slow release from carriers later. The natural polymers form adequate physico-chemical and/or chemical bonds for intercalated components and also additionally used controlling polymeric films are responsible for the controlled slow release action of these fertilizers /3/.

This report is a part of studies concerned with the development of slow release N,K fertilizers on organic carriers base and with their application in horticulture.
