ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS ON THE QUALITY OF STORED GERANIUM OIL

Abstract:
The specific gravity, ester number after acetylation, total alcohol content and refractiv index of a steam distilled geranium oil increased gradually during long-term storage in dark, filled containers. The specific optical rotation and ester number of the oil fell steadily. When air was present in the storage container, the physicochemical changes in the oil were rapid, so that the oil had clearly deteriorated at 16 months, and was unmarketable at 24 months. The presence of 1% water in the oil also accelerated storage deterioration so that the oil was unsaleable after 12 month storage. Light accelerated changes in stored oil, particularly during the last 8 months of storage. Oil stored at 5 ±2°C showed slower rates of change in most physicochemical properties during storage.
