ISHS Acta Horticulturae 143: VIII African Symposium on Horticultural Crops

FUNGAL AND BACTERIAL DISEASES ON VEGETABLES IN THE SUDAN

Author:   M. El Hilo Omer
Abstract:
Cropping systems and climatic factors play a major role in the distribution of fungal and bacterial diseases of vegetables. Rust fungi predominate where free water on leaf surfaces and suitable temperatures prevail. Downy mildews and leaf spots, similarly require high humidity and rainfall for their spread and dispersal. The dry summer and winter in central Sudan is suited for the survival of bacterial plant pathogens in plant debri. During the rainy season infection occurs from infected crop remains.

The powdery mildews are the most serious group of disease causal organism on vegetables. Their wide host range and ability of conidia to germinate at low relative humidity enable this group to occur throughout the country. Nearly all important vegetables are subject to infection by one or more of the mildew fungi.

Screening trials conducted on okra, sweet pepper and cucurbits gave excellent disease control and yield response.
