Abstract:
Field observations revealed that several cassava varieties and hybrids that were introduced from Kenya and that are known to have some level of resistance to cassava mosaic disease (CMD) have become susceptible to the virus at Heliu, Torit in eastern Equatoria Province.
These lines were brought in form of vegetative cuttings, planted in isolation nursery plots and left for natural infection.
But two out of four varieties which were imported as seeds from Ibadan, Nigeria, and which were raised in the same nursery are still showing no symptoms of mosaic at Heliu, Torit and at Arapi near Nimule.
It is hoped that these two Nigerian varieties plus a few of the Kenya lines that still posses a reasonable degree of resistance to CMD will form the nucleus of Virus Free Programme for the production of cuttings for farmers in the "Green Belt" areas of the Southern Region since they are also resistant to Cassava Bacterial Blight (CBB) and other minor diseases of the crop.
